How to test your microphone

  1. Press Start mic test and allow microphone access.
  2. Talk normally. The level meter should move and the waveform should react to your voice.
  3. Press Record 5 seconds, speak, and the clip plays back automatically so you can hear yourself.
  4. Use the dropdown to switch between microphones, for example a headset and a laptop mic.

Reading the results

Normal speech usually sits in the middle of the meter. If the bar barely moves, your mic is too quiet or muted. If clipping shows Yes, your input is too loud and will sound distorted, so lower the input gain in your system sound settings.

Mic not working? Try these fixes

No sound detected

Check for a mute switch on your headset or cable. On Windows, open Sound settings and confirm the right input device is selected and not muted. On a Mac, check System Settings, Sound, Input.

Permission was blocked

Click the microphone icon in the address bar and allow access, then reload the page. Also check your operating system's privacy settings for microphone access.

Wrong microphone

Computers often have several inputs. Pick each one from the dropdown until the meter moves when you speak.

Bluetooth headset sounds bad

Many Bluetooth headsets switch to a low quality mode when the mic is in use. This is normal. A wired headset or USB mic will sound noticeably better.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. The recording is created and played back inside your browser and is discarded when you leave the page.

What does clipping mean?

Clipping happens when the signal is louder than the mic can capture, which causes distortion. Lower the input volume until clipping stops.

Why is my mic so quiet?

The input gain may be low, the wrong mic may be selected, or you may be too far from it. Increase the input level in your system sound settings.

Does this work with AirPods and Bluetooth headsets?

Yes, as long as they are connected and selected as the input device.

Can I test my mic on my phone?

Yes. The test works in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android.

Why does my headset mic work but not my laptop mic?

Your laptop mic may be muted with a keyboard key (often F4 or a key with a crossed out mic), disabled in your sound settings, or blocked by your laptop maker's privacy software. On Windows, open Sound settings, Input, and make sure the built in microphone is enabled and not set to zero volume. Then pick it from the dropdown on this page.
