How to test your webcam
- Press Start webcam test.
- When your browser asks for camera permission, choose Allow.
- You should see yourself in the preview. The panel below shows the camera name, resolution, megapixels and measured frame rate.
- If you have more than one camera, pick another one from the dropdown.
The resolution shown is what your camera is actually sending, not what the box says. A camera sold as 1080p but showing 640 x 480 here is usually limited by its USB port, a driver, or another app holding the camera.
Webcam not working? Try these fixes
Permission was blocked
Click the camera icon in your browser's address bar and allow access, then reload. On Windows, also check Settings, Privacy and security, Camera, and make sure camera access is on for your browser. On a Mac, check System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera.
Another app is using the camera
Only one app can use most webcams at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or any video app, then try again.
Black screen
Many laptops have a physical privacy shutter or a keyboard shortcut (often F8 or F10) that disables the camera. Check both. For USB cameras, try a different port and avoid unpowered hubs.
Low frame rate or grainy image
Webcams lower their frame rate in dim light to collect more light per frame. Add light in front of you, not behind you, and the frame rate usually goes up.
Frequently asked questions
Is this webcam test safe?
Yes. The video is processed by your own browser and is never uploaded, recorded or stored. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the test still works.
Why does my webcam show a lower resolution than advertised?
The browser reports what the camera actually delivers. USB 2.0 ports, older drivers, or another app holding the camera can force a lower resolution.
What is a good webcam frame rate?
30 fps looks smooth for video calls. 60 fps is better for streaming. Below 15 fps looks choppy, often because the room is too dark.
Does this work on phones?
Yes. On a phone you can switch between the front and back cameras using the dropdown.
Can I take a picture?
Yes. Press Save snapshot and the image is saved directly to your device.
